Malformations of cortical development (MCD) is associated with a wide range of developmental delay and drug resistant epilepsy in children. By using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) and event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) of cortical electroencephalography (EEG) data, we tried to investigate the neural changes of spatiotemporal functional connectivity (FC) and fast oscillation (FO) dynamics in a rat model of methylazoxymethanol (MAM)-induced MCD. A total of 28 infant rats with prenatal exposure to MAM and those of age matched 28 controls with prenatal saline exposure were used. RS-fMRI were acquired at postnatal day 15 (P15) and 29 (P29), and correlation coefficient analysis of eleven region of interests (ROI) was done to find the differences of functional networks between four groups. Two hour-cortical EEGs were also recorded at P15 and P29 and the ERSP of gamma (30-80 Hz) and ripples (80-200 Hz) were analyzed. The rats with MCD showed significantly delayed development of superior colliculus-brainstem network compared to control rats at P15. In contrast to marked maturation of default mode network (DMN) in controls from P15 to P29, there was no clear development in MCD rats. The MCD rats showed significantly higher cortical gamma and ripples-ERSP at P15 and lower cortical ripples-ERSP at P29 than those of control rats. This study demonstrated delayed development of FC and altered cortical FO dynamics in rats with malformed brain. The results should be further investigated in terms of the epileptogenesis and cognitive dysfunction in patients with MCD.Background Staged lavage was first introduced in the 1970s and now serves as a therapeutic option for septic patients with peritonitis. A central aspect of this treatment concept is leaving the abdomen open after a wide incision. To evaluate the influence of transverse vs. median access to the abdomen in staged lavage, data from the authors' patients were analyzed. Methods To evaluate patients with peritonitis, prospective intensive care data were examined together with data on the surgical details. The main aspects covered here were the surgical details of the lavage (namely, transverse vs. median laparotomy), number of lavages, fascia closure, wound-healing disorders, and observed lethality, in combination with the preoperatively evaluated SAPS-II score, expected hospital lethality, patient age, and the Mannheim Peritonitis Index. Results Between January 2008 and December 2018, 522 patients were treated with open abdomen and staged lavage. The mean age of the patients was 66.0 years (standard deviation (SD) 15.9 years). A median incision was used in 140 cases, and transverse laparotomy was performed in 382. The mean SAPS-II score was 46.5 (SD 15.7), expected lethality was 39.6% (SD 26.3%), and observed lethality was 19.9%. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/AZD0530.html On average, two lavages were performed after the index operation. Transverse incision was significantly less likely to cause wound-healing disorder (p=0.03), and fascial dehiscence was observed less frequently in the transverse laparotomies group than in median incisions in the statistical trend (p=0.06). Conclusion In summary, staged lavage reduced expected lethality in patients with peritonitis. Transverse incision caused wound-healing disorders and fascial dehiscence less often. Therefore, the indication for transverse laparotomy should be generous, as this form of treatment is advantageous in case of peritonitis.Current study was planned to explore the therapeutic response of different doses of hydroethanolic extract of Epimedium grandiflorum leaves in male albino rats. Phytochemical analysis, HPLC and FTIR spectroscopy results revealed the presence of wide range of phenolic compounds and functional groups, respectively. Further, extract not induced significant hemolysis (7.56 ± 1.297%) against PBS (3.65 ± 0.35%) as negative control; while have significant clot lysis (44 ± 5.2%) potential, exhibited DPPH (78.87 ± 5.427%) scavenging, H2O2 (31.82 ± 3.491%) scavenging, antioxidant and reducing power activities. In vivo experimentation in albino male rats' revealed that administration of different doses (50, 100, 200 mg/Kg b.w.) of extract orally for 42 days after CCl4 intoxication significantly (P less then 0.05) restore the selected parameters including liver enzymes, renal profiles, and stress markers and significantly (P less then 0.05) increased reproductive hormones like testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone and prolactin while significantly (P less then 0.05) decreased progesterone and estradiol toward normal in dose dependent manner. Significant (P less then 0.05) improvement in the structural architecture of testicular tissue particularly in high dose group (200 mg/Kg b.w.) was also observed. Results revealed E. grandiflorum has significant therapeutic response to address the healthcare problems particularly of impotency.Nano-fertilizer(s), an emerging field of agriculture, is alternate option for enhancement of plant growth replacing the synthetic fertilizers. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) can be used as the zinc source for plants. The present investigation was carried out to assess the role of ZnO NPs in growth promotion of maize plants. Biosynthesized ZnO NPs (using Bacillus sp) were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Zeta potential. Different concentrations of ZnO NPs (2, 4, 8, 16 mg/L) were explored in pot culture experiment. Size of ZnO NPs ranged between 16 and 20 nm. A significant increase in growth parameters like shoot length (61.7%), root length (56.9%) and significantly higher level of protein was observed in the treated plants. The overall pattern for growth biomarkers including the protein contents was maximum at 8 mg/L of ZnO NPs. It was observed that application of biosynthesized ZnO NPs has improved majority of growth biomarkers including plant growth parameters, protein contents and leaf area. Therefore, biosynthesized ZnO NPs could be considered as an alternate source of nutrient in Zn deficient soils for promoting the modern agriculture.
